Case Study: SEAI – SensorCIS Helping Public Bodies Achieve Efficiency Targets

Using data generated by Ultan Technologies’ SensorCIS reporting tool, the SEAI’s Annual Report 2017 shows they’re almost 2/3rds of the way towards achieving their 2020 goal. The commitment to achieve a 33% energy efficiency improvement by 2020 was made to the EU by the Irish Government, on behalf of all its public bodies and was passed into statue in 2014. Ultan Technologies were chosen as key partners to the SEAI helping them with their vision for Ireland’s energy to be sustainable, secure, affordable, and clean.

 

There are two key obligations for public bodies:

  1. Requirement – under the provisions of SI 426 of 2014 – to report energy management and performance data directly to SEAI each year in order to track progress towards the 2020 target.
  2. Requirement – to publish an annual statement on energy performance. This statement must describe ‘the actions it is taking or has taken, to improve its energy efficiency and an assessment of the energy savings arising from those actions’.

 

SensorCIS is used by the public bodies to report their energy consumption data. A highly customisable cloud-based solution, SensorCIS allows public bodies to monitor and manage all their energy consumption data in one place for deep analysis. In 2016, 336 public bodies and 2,171 Schools reported data to the SEAI using SensorCIS; central to the successful adoption of SensorCIS has been the ability to 1) complete the reporting process, and 2) use SensorCIS as a tool for the completion of energy management tasks.

 

 

Data from SensorCIS was used by the SEAI to achieve efficiency gains through the implementation of thousands of diverse projects. Key findings from the analysis of the data reported by 336 public bodies and 2,171 schools for 2016:

 

  • Their combined total primary energy consumption was 9,375 GWh and their total energy spend was €536 million.
  • This is estimated to represent 95% of the energy consumption of the sector.
  • Annual primary energy savings of 2,336 GWh were achieved, which is equivalent to 520,000 tonnes of CO2 savings.
  • These savings amount to a 20% improvement in business, as usual, representing €133 million in cost savings for the sector in 2016.
  • The cumulative avoided CO2 emissions since their baselines amount to 2,683,000 tonnes, while the value of the cumulative energy savings over the same period is €737 million.
