Choosing an implementation team

Make sure that you have representatives of the end users on the implementation team or available to the implementation team at all times.

If you are choosing external consultants to do your implementation, make sure that they will put in the time to learn about your business. Business knowledge is more important than technical knowledge in BI implementations – it is far more difficult to choose appropriate Key Performance Indicators than it is to implement them.

The OLAP report – "How not to buy a BI product" states that "Consultants, including the Big Five (or ‘Final Four’), usually favour products for which they provide implementation services, and the vendors with whom they have partnerships. They may also be resellers of some products, which they will invariably favour. The BI Surveys have found that implementations led by large, general purpose consultants have a much lower success rate than those led by smaller specialist BI consulting firms."
